Rest In Penquin

Abby Arthur and Noah Pingul

To all Club Penguin members, it’s time to say goodbye to your igloos, and your puffles, because after 11 years Club Penguin is shutting down. Club Penguin began in October of 2005, and will close March 29 2017.

This open world game reached its peak in 2007 when it was bought by Disney. At the time of its’ purchase by Disney, it had an estimated value of over $700 million. At that time Club Penguin boasted over 200 million users and a monthly user traffic of 8.5 million. With its cartoonish Penguins and simple mechanics, it has hooked users for years. This game has brought joy and online addiction to hundreds of millions of people over the years.

Although this beloved world may seem like it is coming to an end, Club Penguin is not gone forever. At the end of March, when the virtual world is experiencing its final days, users will be able to transfer their accounts, puffles and all, to a new world of penguins. In its place, Club Penguin Island will be released and available on mobile devices. The main reason for the closure of the original site is due to how Club Penguin’s targeted audience, children and pre-teens, are getting their entertainment from more exciting apps with newer technology and social media. Yes there are still children actively subscribed to the site, but a large amount of the users are teens and young adults who re-activate their penguins for nostalgic purposes or even as a way to meet significant others.

For all the dedicated members who are still living in the world of penguin, there is currently an online, two month party going on before the final retirement of the classic virtual game as one last celebration.
